Core Subjects

Literacy
Literacy is taught through the Primary Framework. This Revised Literacy framework allows lessons to be taught in a more flexible way. There is a strong emphasis on teaching speaking and listening skills through a variety of methods including drama and group discussion/activities. The framework allows and promotes Literacy to be taught across and through other subject areas. Each class will have a Literacy lesson everyday that will last approximately an hour depending on the lesson content.

In addition to daily Literacy lessons, classes have 4 twenty minute sessions for reading per week.

Reading
Your child will be issued with a reading book and a reading contact book. Children are encouraged and expected to take these home every day and return them the following day. For children who have a reading age two years below their chronological age, we will try to hear them read in school as often as possible. It is also an expectation that children will read at home as often as possible.

In school we use the Accelerated reader scheme to encourage and improve reading. The scheme allows the children to take a short quiz on the computer about the book they have just read. The children earn points by passing the quizzes and work towards individual targets and certificates.

When a child receives a certificate for their reading, they also receive a token which can be used in the school bookshop to either buy a book costing £1 or put it towards the cost of a more expensive book.

Mathematics
As with Literacy, the framework for Numeracy has been revised. There is more flexibility for teachers so that they can make links to other subjects when appropriate and spend more time on a topic if the children need to consolidate their learning. The framework is recently being reviewed for its effectiveness and changes made to suit both teachers and pupils.
