SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning)
SEAL offers a whole-curriculum framework for teaching social, emotional and behavioural skills to all children and is organised into seven themes which are covered within the school year:
- New Beginnings
- Getting on and falling out
- Bullying
- Going for goals!
- Good to be me
- Relationships
- Changes
SEAL is building on the effective work that Glencoe is already doing to develop social, emotional and behavioural skills and is working alongside the PSHCE curriculum and circle time.
Sex and Relationship Education
All pupils in Year 6 will receive sex-education lessons. These are carefully prepared in order to avoid embarrassment to the children, but are considered an important preparation for adult life. These lessons are presented by the Class Teacher and the School Nurse.
Children across the year groups are taught about relationships during PSHCE through discussion and circle time.
Special Educational Needs
At Glencoe, we aim to meet the needs of pupils with SEN through the provision of a broad and balanced curriculum which is relevant, differentiated, well-motivated and systematic, irrespective of ability or special needs.
We intend to encourage pupils towards excellence to ensure they reach their full potential and are fully included in our school community. We aim to provide a teaching and learning environment that fosters independence, recognises individual talents and abilities, promotes equal opportunities and affords equal respect to all.
We believe that provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs is a matter for our school as a whole.
Children may have special educational needs either throughout, or at any time during, their school career. These children may need a degree of extra help either on a short-term basis or to address more long-standing needs.
We recognise the importance of working together in partnership with children, their parents and outside agencies to ensure that a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience are shared in a way that benefits each child.
If you have a particular concern, please see the class teacher initially. Mrs Kirstie Jones, our Deputy Headteacher and Special Needs Co-ordinator, is always happy to discuss worries which the class teacher cannot always easily deal with.
Nurturing Groups
As an integral part of our Special Needs provision, in 2003 we set up Nurturing Groups in our School. Our aim is to give respite to the children who display emotional and behavioural difficulties, who need to develop their social skills and who need help to cope in the classroom.
Although our Nurturing room is based in a classroom, it is less formal. It is furnished with sofas and cushions to give it a calming atmosphere.
