Homework

Homework is compulsory.  On average Years 3 and 4 will have three pieces of homework to complete each week.  Years 5 and 6 will have 5 pieces of homework.  Homework will normally require about 30 minutes to complete.  Homework concentrates on English and Mathematics.

If there is a valid reason why a pupil cannot complete their homework we ask parents to let the teacher know.  A short note will suffice.  Otherwise pupils are required to spend time during their breaks catching up on work.  The Time Out Room is used as it is supervised, but on completion of the work the child is able to depart.

Pupils are encouraged to complete homework, through a half-termly award of certificates.  This culminates in a ‘gold certificate’ at the end of the year for those that have made an excellent effort.  A special board, which includes names of all certificate winners, is in our main hall.

Please spend time with your child helping them with their homework.  However, doing their homework for them achieves nothing.  Encourage your child to tell the teacher if they have not understood tasks.

A quiet place for homework is important.  Switch off the T.V. or use another room.
Children love getting praise from their parents – make sure they get it for effort with their homework!

Reading books should also come home regularly and we want you to share these with your child.  Your child’s teacher has little time during the day to hear, and help with reading so hearing your child reading is important. It also lets you see the progress they are making.

If you find that the homework is too easy or difficult, or your child is not bringing home a reading book regularly, please consult the class teacher.
